Digipak - Initial and final versions

Image
After producing my three initial designs, I went on to create the images that would form the prototype of  my final digipak - using the designs as reference, I took photographs of the city centre skyline in the daytime and early evening, along with the evening night sky and the moon in my back garden, as I thought those images would best reflect the idea of fate and destiny (the title of the album being 'What If'), as well as the R&B genre. Next, I looked over the photos and selected six that would suit the digipak best, before sorting them on Microsoft Office Word, according to which panel they should go on: either the front, inside left, inside centre, inside right, extra panel and the back. Here is my initial digipak prototype print-out: From top: Front cover and inside centre images From top: Inside centre and inside right images From top: Extra panel and back cover images Like the music video, the digipak images were shown to the students in...

Digipak - Ideas and Designs

Image
What is a digipak? A digipak is a type of packaging used for CDs and DVDs, typically made out of cardboard in the style of a fold-out book with a plastic holder for the disc. Unlike plastic jewel cases, digipaks are thought of as more environmentally friendly. What is it used for? In music, digipaks are often used for CD singles or special edition CD albums. For my coursework, my digipak is an album which also intends to promote a single. My design I used the lyrics of my song 'What If' and the plans for my accompanying music video, as well as the final product, to provide inspiration for my cover artwork and the panels. I started off by drawing boxes for the six parts and used a combination of hand drawn images and photos from the internet to come up with three ideas for what the prototype could look like and how it could reflect the mood of the album, as well as its link to the music video and advert. Reflections From the above designs, we can...

Storyboard - Second Draft

Image
After filming and editing my music video, I found that most of what I had produced looked different to what I had initially planned - for example, the video began with clips of the sky and my paper figures, rather than an establishing shot of the park and the people, and I added shots of crowds of people and a girl standing in the park, which were not in my initial plan. I added these because my initial planned shots did not accommodate the length of the song, which was three minutes and thirty-nine seconds. As a result, I had to change some frames so that they matched what was in the video. Here are the pages from the second draft of my storyboard: Having edited the storyboard, I later had to show my music video to the rest of my class so they could evaluate it, writing down what they liked and what could be improved. The two most common criticisms were that there was no clear narrative and there were too many random shots, a few of which were repeated. I theref...

Storyboard

Image
The images below are photos of the storyboard for my music video - I worked on this after creating the timeline as a way of visualising what would be in it and the order of the footage, with notes on the camera shots & movement, the approximate timings and descriptions of what would happen. I plan to use this tool when I come to creating my music video, so that the images match my ideas and vision for the final product.

Timeline

Image
After deciding on a song and synopsis, I had to create a timeline with lyrics as well as descriptions of what happens chronologically in the video so I would be sure of what would take place and when it would be placed in the editing/post-production stage, along with approximate placings of the song's lyrics.

Character and artist profiles for music video

Below are profiles for the characters who will feature in my music video and the artist who recorded and released the song 'What If', Craig David. Doing this means that I have a clear idea of who they are, what they will look like and their roles in the narrative of the video.  'Craig David', however, won't be portrayed by an actor in the visual - the sole focus will be on the couple. Character profiles for music video Guy Age: Late teens Background: was in a relationship with a girl, but they split up; he wishes that he walked up to her and asked her to stay with him, and wishes that she would/could return to him. Costume: bright jacket, jeans. Actor: Girl Age: Late teens Background: She dated the lead male before she decided to leave him and end the relationship. Costume: quirky, colourful clothing – includes funky trousers, may include a hat, possibly a beret Actor: Artist Name: Marcus Beliefs: Equality, environment.

Song choice, ideas and synopsis

The below is a document detailing my song choice for my music video, ideas for the premise/synopsis and what may be in the video. Lyrics have also been included to guide me in creating my timeline and for the actors to lip sync to when we're filming the music video. Song choice, ideas/synopsis Song – What If by Craig David Ideas for synopsis/plot/premise Main character reminisces over lost love and tries to come to terms with it by taking a trip to a park. However, this proves difficult as they see images of love all around them. Ideas for details in the video ·          Mostly POV shots of park views, e.g. lake, people walking, trees. ·          Include a brief shot of a paper figure appearing, then vanishing, from a bench. ·          Shots of swans and swan boats, if possible. ·          Couples a...

Analysis of R&B album adverts

Image
As part of my research into promotion of R&B music, I have looked at different album adverts of the genre, investigating the ways in which images, fonts etc. have been applied in order to promote the artist and their music. Rihanna - Loud (2010) This album advert has embedded the cover of the album with the image used for the lead single 'Only Girl (In The World)', the latter of which features the artist crouched in a field, covering her body with what looks like a red sheet, thus informing the audience that this track will be included on the album and will feature the themes of vulnerability, protection and insecurity. White capitals have been used to emphasise the album's title (Loud), the artist (Rihanna) and the release date (November 16th), so that it can stand out from the red background and consumers can know when they'll be able to buy it and who is releasing it. The dominant colour used here is red - Rihanna has red hair, she wears red lipsti...

Analysis of R&B digipaks

Image
Prince - 3121 (2006) Image: Prince, the artist, has his back facing away from the camera and has a hand against a wall, conveying mystery.  Orange-yellow, black and white have been used to form the main colour scheme of this digipak - they connote joy, warmth, darkness, sophistication, light, peace and purity, giving the audience an insight regarding the artist's nature and who he is as a person. The inside images fold outwards to show the album title in a different font, a pair of double doors and the CD, which zooms into the silhouette of Prince's face. Above those doors, a symbol located in between the numbers '31' and '21', which, when put together, create '3121', the full title of the album - this introduces audiences to the album and 'invites' them to listen to the music. Likewise, the booklet shows images of his home, including a lounge, a bedroom and the steps to what looks like a social area; Prince can ...

Analysis of R&B album covers

Image
Aaliyah - Age Ain't Nothing But A Number (1994) Image: this cover features Aaliyah, the artist, wearing a hoodie, jacket and sunglasses, seemingly gazing in the distance away from the camera while a guy who is also in sunglasses watches from the side of a wall. Copy: Aaliyah’s name is written in a large, white typeface as a contrast to the smaller, purple font of the title ‘Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number’ – the former is presented as being more important than the music as the artist and her image are being promoted. Genre: the clothes reflect the R&B genre as they have connotations of urban and street and not much colours are used. Chris Brown - Fortune (2012) Image: Wearing a suit and tie, Chris Brown is standing in front of a background which has a white light and the word ‘fortune’ (which is the album’s title) written in different languages, as well as hieroglyphics. This is likely to have been done in order to appeal to international audiences ...
