Digipak - Ideas and Designs
What is a digipak?
A digipak is a type of packaging used for CDs and DVDs, typically made out of cardboard in the style of a fold-out book with a plastic holder for the disc. Unlike plastic jewel cases, digipaks are thought of as more environmentally friendly.
What is it used for?
In music, digipaks are often used for CD singles or special edition CD albums. For my coursework, my digipak is an album which also intends to promote a single.
My design
I used the lyrics of my song 'What If' and the plans for my accompanying music video, as well as the final product, to provide inspiration for my cover artwork and the panels. I started off by drawing boxes for the six parts and used a combination of hand drawn images and photos from the internet to come up with three ideas for what the prototype could look like and how it could reflect the mood of the album, as well as its link to the music video and advert.

Reflections
From the above designs, we can see that there is a common shared theme of nature and fate, which reflects the album and single title of 'What If', as well as the lyrics 'What if it was written, what if it was fate' - I have used images of the sky in the night & day, along with stars, to connote the idea of fate and destiny, since fate is often described as being written in the stars. I feel that by linking my music to the packaging, these initial ideas present life as unpredictable and uncontrollable, and bright and dark, thus communicating that anything can happen and anything is possible. These designs can therefore be deemed to be effective in structuring and visually presenting my album and single.
